Battlefield 3 Has 3 Expansion Packs Incoming This Year

Expansion Packs, not just downloadable maps which EA state will add not just new maps, but also new modes and weapons.

Close Quarters is an Infantry-only pack, focusing on surprise-surprise, close quarters fighting that will highlight the minor destruction that Battlefield 3 offers, not just the building-dropping scale destruction.

Close Quarters will also bring with it new assignments and dog tags when it launches this June.

Armored Kill will feature ‘new driveable tanks, ATVs, mobile artillery and more’.
DICE and EA also state that Armored Kill will contain the biggest map in Battlefield history, look out for it Fall 2012.

End Game ‘will ship in the winter but details remain tightly guarded.’
Your guess is as good as ours, we’re hoping for jetpacks…

Patrick Bach, Executive Producer, Battlefield 3 said, “Instead of delivering piecemeal map packs, we’re giving players a completely new experience with every themed expansion pack to keep the action fresh. Our expansions are designed to excite our large and active fan base while attracting new recruits with gameplay that is dynamic and unpredictable every time.”

The change from traditional map pack DLC would seem to be EA combatting Activision’s choice to supply Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with a steady stream of maps throughout the year, rather than the old model.

With the two biggest military shooters in the market changing how they deliver DLC, the entire gaming industry could (and should) sit up and take note.
