Apple WWDC 2010 Summary – the iPhone 4 announcement

Right, so that’s Steve Job’s Keynote for WWDC 2010 over. Here’s the summary:

iBooks has 22% share of the eBook market and the iBook App will have native PDF support at the end of the month.

iPhone 4 – New Design, Thin 9.3mm Thin, Antenna’s integrated into the frame, “Retina” Display at 326pixels per inch (holy moly), 960 x 640 resolution (I’m not entirely sure why you’d want a display of that resolution in a 3.5inch screen, but sure, why not!), Apples custom A4 Processor (as found in the iPad), 2 mic’s (one at the top for noise canceling), it takes Micro SIMs, there is now an LED Camera Flash on board, 802.11n (and the usual, HSDPA, GPS, Bluetooth, Compass,), Gyroscope (this is New – it’ll be able to detect how fast the phone is being turned and give Six Axis motion sensitivity to the phone, ala the PS3 Controller), 5mp Camera (with a back lit sensor – this is a good thing for low light photos), 720p HD Video Recording (and i’m guessing that second mic will be used for Stereo Sound), iMovie (yep, iMovie actually on the iPhone 4 itself! Interesting!),

iOS – formally, the iPhone OS. Nothing new really here. Multi-Tasking, Folders, Wallpapers, (YAWN, all things that other Mobile Operating systems have had for years and years), Microsoft Bing Search Engine built in!!!, iOS4 is out June 21st and is Free (not available for 1st Gen iPod Touch and reduced features for iPhone 3G and full feature support on iPhone 3GS)

iBooks – iBooks are coming to the iPhone, and with that screen supposedly it’ll be great to read on (seriously, it’s still an LCD and it’s still 3.5inchs… NO, just say NO to reading books on that size and type of screen). iBooks will be on the iPod Touch as well. So buy a book once, and it’ll be on the iPhone4, iPad and iPod Touch. It’ll sync your place in the book, so if you’re reading on the iPad and leave the house you can open the app on your iPhone4 and carry on from where you were.

iAds – gonna do what it says on the tin, put ads in your apps and take up valuable screen real estate

oh and the “One more thing…” – Video Calling on the iPhone4, and they’re calling it “FACE TIME” -  (YAWN – really, it’s been tried before, and just doesn’t work. Who out there wants to make an effort to look “decent” to make a phone call?)… oh, and the catch, it’s Wifi only (in 2010)!

iPhone4 on Sale in the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan on June 24th – July in Ireland (and 17 other countries)
