Drag Me To Hell

Drag Me To Hell

Sam Raimi is at it again, after his spell has the director of the Spider-Man films, he’s back scary us senseless.

Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is a loans officer who wants a promotion and she must do anything to get it. Then Mrs. Ganush walks into her bank and pleads with her to give her an extension on her homeloan otherwise it’ll be taken away from her. Although Christine has a good heart and wants to help the woman out she refuses the woman so that she can get ahead in her career. Mrs. Ganush then puts a gypsy curse on Christine, one which she later finds out that she has three days to stop or she’ll be dragged to hell.

That’s the basic premise of this horror flick, Raimi takes out his bag of visual tricks as a director and fires everything at the screen giving us a few genuine scares throughout the running time.

Alison Lohman, from Matchstick Men fame, is sweet as our heroine and Justin Long (Dodgeball, Die Hard 4.0) pops up as her adorable boyfriend but it is Lorna Raver as the frightening Mrs. Ganush that steals the movie. Every scene she’s in had me on the edge of my seat as she tries to get at her cursed soul.

It goes at a fair old pace and at just over 90 minutes, it never outstays its welcome even though it gets very silly towards the end but what horror films don’t these days as we’ve seen it all before. Drag Me to Hell tries to give us something original and for the most part it succeeds.
